Daniele De Rossi explains Roma accepted the jeers as “a sign of respect. We have great potential, but can also throw it all away in 10 minutes.”
At the final whistle of their 3-2 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk, the players went under the Curva Sud as the fans insulted them.
“It is a difficult moment in football terms, but it doesn't take courage to do that. We went there to thank the people who came out to support us, as is right, and accepted the jeers.
“It is also a sign of respect for us to accept abuse from those who share with us the joys, the derby wins and great victories. We go under the curva to celebrate, but also to get the odd jeer.”
Roma have suffered three consecutive defeats in all competition and look to be crashing out of the Champions League.
“It is not easy to analyse on a game like this. Roma have great talent and potential, but can also throw it all away in 10 minutes as we did tonight,” continued De Rossi.
“We probably need time before we can become a great squad, both in terms of performance and results. Perhaps those sides also have the inner calm to not panic even in the most difficult moments.
“What must we do in Ukraine for the second leg? It's not easy to say right now, but we have to begin again with a more optimistic outlook.”
