Gigi Buffon explains why he followed his “heart” by staying at Juventus. “We are setting down foundations for the future.”
The goalkeeper was repeatedly linked with a move away in recent years, but opted to stand by the Bianconeri even after their demotion to Serie B and failure to qualify for the Champions League this term.
“My decision to stay at Juventus was made by my heart, though I also thought we would rise again very quickly,” he told JuventusMember.com.
“That was not the case, but even if we haven't won yet, I have been paid back in affection and love the fans show every time I step on to the field or walk down the street.
“We are setting the foundations for the future and I think it's looking bright. I have been at Juve for almost 10 years and have so many wonderful memories.
“The first great celebration was the Scudetto on May 5 2002, wonderful as it was unexpected. Then the Champions League Final in Manchester, even if the result was negative. Finally, the Serie B debut against Rimini in 2006.”
Buffon made his Italy comeback this month, having been out since undergoing back surgery in June.
“I have inherited the captain's armband from Fabio Cannavaro and it's a wonderful recognition for me. I had my first call-up in 1997, a good 14 years ago, so it had to happen sooner or later.
“I have to say I feel the honour and duty of wearing the armband, but there are many captains for this Nazionale.”
