Inter will look to reinforce their defence in January with the signing of Wolfsburg centre-back Andrea Barzagli, according to German paper Kicker.
The Nerazzurri need a replacement for Walter Samuel who is out for most if not all the season after he suffered cruciate ligament damage at the weekend.
Inter had made Genoa's Andrea Ranocchia their No 1 choice for the position, partly because they already own 50 per cent of the player's contract.
However, the situation at Genoa is unclear following Gian Piero Gasperini's dismissal and it's likely that his replacement Davide Ballardini will want to keep the team's best players at least until the end of the season.
Barzagli represents a relatively cheap option given his contract expires at the end of this season.
Kicker claims that the former Palermo defender has a verbal agreement with Wolfsburg whereby he can rescind his contract if an Italian club shows interest in January.
Such an eventuality makes Barzagli an attractive option, especially considering Inter's keenness to watch the pennies this season.
