Hamsik: Napoli exceeded expectation

Marek Hamsik looks back over Napoli's amazing season. “A few years ago I'd never have thought that this club could be great again.”

The midfielder is on international duty for Slovakia's Euro 2012 qualifier against Andorra.

“I have never played so many games, but at the same time I'm happy at the way I maintained my fitness,” he wrote on his official website.

“I'll be honest, a few years ago I'd never have thought that this club could be great again, but with time Napoli improved and thankfully it all went well. Serie A is extremely tough.

“Looking back over this season, the last group game of the Europa League certainly stands out, as we managed to grab a 1-0 win over Steaua Bucharest in stoppages to go through.

“Nor can I forget the final home match in Serie A against Inter, as that allowed us to qualify for the Champions League. It is Napoli's best finish since winning the 1990 Scudetto.”

The Stadio San Paolo was turned into a huge party arena that night that will rest in Hamsik's memory.

“We knew the fans would explode after getting into the Champions League and that was the case. I can't imagine what would happen in Naples if we won something!

“President Aurelio De Laurentiis rewarded the players by giving us all a six-day vacation on the island of Capri with our partners.”
