Sampdoria insist that captain Angelo Palombo will be in charge of his own destiny following relegation to Serie B.
The Doria captain is the club's most wanted player after the port based outfit were surprise Serie A casualties this term.
"We need to speak with him as Palombo is technically only a 'guest' in Serie B," Doria sporting director Pasquale Sensibile told Radio Kiss Kiss.
"The new season will lead to the European Championship and we need to understand whether he is ready to put his heart and soul into this Division, a Division that he doesn't really belong in.
"But Angelo has never asked us to leave. You can't imagine how much respect we have for him and Sampdoria will certainly not keep him here against his will."
Napoli are again being linked with the player given their desire to strengthen ahead of their Champions League campaign.
The Azzurri are not alone though and could face competition from Inter and Fiorentina.
The Nerazzurri want some fresh blood in central midfield, while the Viola are set to reconstruct after a mediocre campaign.
The Tuscan giants are expected to sell club captain Riccardo Montolivo after he refused to sign a new contract.
Although Montolivo and Palombo are different types of midfielder, Montolivo's exit would create space for the Italian international.
Palombo is actually a former Fiorentina player.
