Genoa held talks with Serie A rivals Napoli yesterday to discuss a possible move for Luca Cigarini.
The former Italian Under-21 international has returned to Naples this summer after spending last term on loan at Sevilla.
According to reports, Genoa sporting director Stefano Capozucca met counterpart Riccardo Bigon to ask about his availability.
Cigarini will be released by the Stadio San Paolo outfit this summer given that he doesn't fit into the plans of boss Walter Mazzarri.
A return to Atalanta, the club where he grew as a youngster, has also been suggested as a possible destination for the 25-year-old.
"Atalanta could be interested in Cigarini," said agent Giovanni Bia. "However, they haven't come out and said anything for obvious reasons."
Cigarini was actually signed by official Pierpaolo Marino at Napoli. The latter now works for the Bergamo club.
