Valon Behrami insists the decision to strip Riccardo Montolivo of the Fiorentina captaincy was solely made by the club.
The Italian international has lost the armband in Florence after opting against signing a new contract at the Artemio Franchi.
"It was the club who chose Alessandro Gamberini to be the new captain," Swiss ace Behrami stated.
"Gamberini has been here at Fiorentina for many years and he is the right man for the job.
"However, the squad would have liked to have had their say on the issue. Had we voted on it then Riccardo would still be the captain."
Midfielder Montolivo has angered club officials by continually refusing to prolong his stay with the Viola.
The former Atalanta playmaker is only tied to the Tuscan club until June 2012. Milan are being linked with his services.
