Inter’s match with Dynamo Kiev will go ahead, but protective masks will be handed out and fans urged to stay home amid a swine flu outbreak.
Ukraine has been hit hard by the pandemic in recent weeks and there were fears UEFA would order the game to be played behind closed doors or even postponed altogether.
It has now been confirmed Wednesday night’s Champions League encounter will go ahead, but Dynamo President Igor Surkis announced unusual measures.
“We have already bought the protective masks for the fans, which we will distribute at the entrance to the stadium.
“As not all the tickets have been sold, all 17,000 spectators will receive a mask. In all we have bought 20,000 masks, which will also be handed out to the stadium staff.”
Mayor of Kiev Leonid Cernovietski does not think that is enough and urged the game to be played behind closed doors.
“We should launch an appeal to the population so that the fans do not come to the stadium.”
In Ukraine so far 67 people have died of respiratory failure, 22 of them are confirmed swine flu cases, while thousands more are in hospital.
