Zenga proposes Italy's Palermo
Sunday 8 November, 2009

Walter Zenga urges Marcello Lippi to call “the entire Palermo squad” up for the Azzurri and dreams of a Champions League experience.

This evening Lippi will announce the players for Italy’s friendly test with Holland and the Coach confessed he was keeping an eye on some Rosanero starlets.

“Would I take Antonio Cassano to the World Cup? I’d rather bring along Fabrizio Miccoli, Mattia Cassani, Federico Balzaretti, Simon Kjaer, Edison Cavani and all of my players,” smiled Zenga on RAI.

Some of them aren’t eligible, as Kjaer is Danish and Cavani Uruguayan, but there have been calls to reconsider Miccoli, Cassani and especially Balzaretti for Azzurri duty.

Palermo had a dire start to the season, but trigger-happy President Maurizio Zamparini stuck with his Coach.

“I get on very well with Zamparini and director Walter Sabatini, but clearly for a Coach the results count more than anything else.

“We can go far. I really like the Champions League atmosphere and that little theme tune they play before kick-off. Who knows, I might be able to hear it again on the field soon enough.”

This is Zenga’s second experience in Sicily after he left Catania in a shock move to cross over for their rivals.

The two clubs come face to face in what is sure to be a heated derby on November 22.

“Sicily is a wonderful region and you really live well here. The people are ready to give you everything and then take everything away if they feel betrayed.”
