Prandelli rues 'phantom' goal
Sunday 4 October, 2009

Cesare Prandelli bitterly criticised the officials for missing a 'phantom' goal at the Stadio Franchi. “It wasn't impossible to see it.”

Alberto Gilardino thought he had won the game with Lazio when he waltzed round the 'keeper and rolled towards an empty net, as the goalline clearance appeared to be over the line.

“When you see two different players tell you that it's a goal, it becomes difficult not to believe them,” said Prandelli after the 0-0 draw.

“Both Gila and [Riccardo] Montolivo were very close to the action, Radu's feet were inside the goal, it wasn't impossible to see it. The incident looked pretty clear.”

Nonetheless, the Viola are held on home turf just days after hammering Liverpool 2-0.

“We tried to score in every conceivable fashion, from the flanks and down the centre, with a series of shots on target.

“It was a good performance after a very tiring week. This is the attitude my team needs to have all the time and I am satisfied.

“We have been working hard at developing attacking play, trying to raise the wingers and give the strikers more room to move.

“The team is interpreting the tactics well, but I'd like to see them move the ball more quickly.”
