Fiorentina have denied signing Santiago Silva and point out “we have never received official bids for Alberto Gilardino.”
There are reports in South America that a deal has been struck for Uruguayan striker Silva, who plays for Velez Sarsfield.
“Silva is a player who interests us, but that's a long way from saying the negotiations are concluded,” director of sport Pantaleo Corvino told Sky Sport Italia.
Silva was expected to join as a replacement for Gilardino, who is a primary transfer target for Genoa.
“We have never received official bids for Gilardino,” insisted Corvino. “Khouma Babacar has asked to leave so he can get more playing time, so we are looking for strikers who can challenge Gilardino for a starting spot.
“Juan Manuel Vargas is an important player for us, but there were only negotiations for him in the past.”
Fiorentina had been in advanced talks with Palermo for Cesare Bovo, but the Italian international has joined Genoa instead.
“There are many negotiations in the transfer market, but the details make the difference. Sometimes contracts don't get signed due to various reasons.”
Pre-season was very tense in Florence with fans protesting and jeering even during the Coppa Italia win over Cittadella.
“After patron Andrea Della Valle's letter, the atmosphere changed and the fans have shown they are close to the team. We can begin a new era together.”
