Alberto Aquilani feels the Faroe Islands deserve credit for putting Italy under pressure in their Euro 2012 qualifier.
The media was critical of last night's performance as, despite the 1-0 victory, the woodwork saved the Azzurri on two occasions.
“We got off to a strong start and then lost some intensity, but we must also give credit to our opponents,” said new Milan signing Aquilani.
“Perhaps we should've given more depth to the side and moved the ball around better, while we didn't always take our chances to have shots from distance.”
Nonetheless, Italy are practically qualified for Euro 2012, especially after Slovenia and Northern Ireland both lost at home.
“We are on an important journey, have improved a great deal and must continue like this. Our positive run is important and we hope to win on Tuesday so that we can celebrate.”
A point against Slovenia at the Stadio Franchi in Florence will be enough to ensure qualification into the European Championships.
Italy currently have an eight-point lead at the top of Group C, having notched up a record 19 points in seven games.
