Adriano Galliani is furious with Udinese after fielding a second string team against Celtic. “This is why Italy are ranked below Cyprus!”
The Milan Vice-President has long been critical of clubs who snub the Champions League and Europa League, which led to the fourth Champions League qualifying spot being taken away from Serie A.
Udinese Coach Francesco Guidolin drew a great deal of criticism when resting almost all his stars in the 1-1 draw in Glasgow on Thursday.
“Every time we play a round in the Champions League, I get a print-out of the current European ranking,” explained Galliani.
“Despite the three victories from Inter, Milan and Napoli, we are in 11th place and even lag behind Cyprus. Do you know why? It's because some clubs show a lack of interest in the Europa League.
“We even set aside a contribution payment in the Lega to motivate them, but when the games arrive, they rotate the squads.
“The problem in Italian football is not knowing who wins Juventus-Milan this Sunday, but rather the 22-point difference from the English ranking.”
Another reason for Serie A's downturn in recent years has been the state of stadiums, as only Juventus have inaugurated an arena that they own.
“If all Italian clubs owned their own stadiums, the income would change radically. Unfortunately, we are light years away from this change. What happened in Turin cannot be repeated.
“The only thing we can try to do at Milan is modernise San Siro so we can soon hope to host a Champions League Final.”
Milan visit the brand new Juventus Stadium on Sunday evening and Galliani was at the inauguration ceremony.
“A club that changes its stadium also changes its crowd. Since the Allianz Arena in Munich was rebuilt, Bayern have been consistently sold out, because people are interested in the stadium and not just the match.
“My compliments to the Juve directors who have been able to achieve this great feat.”
