Philippe Mexes is hoping to make his Serie A debut for Milan against Palermo at the weekend.
The 29-year-old joined the Rossoneri in the summer on a free transfer after his contract at Roma expired.
However, he's so far been unable to play given that he's spent the last six months recovering from knee ligament damage.
"It will be an honour to replace Alessandro Nesta, one of the greatest defenders in the world," said the former Auxerre man.
"We've endured a difficult period, but we'll pick ourselves up. I'm at 100 per cent and I'll be there at San Siro against Palermo."
Mexes, who joined Roma in 2004, hasn't played a competitive game since the Giallorossi's tie against Juventus in April.
The Rossoneri have had a tough opening to the season. They lost their last Serie A game at Juve which means they've collected just five points from five League games so far.
