New Milan defender Philippe Mexes will go under the knife to help heal a small fracture to his left hand.
The stopper picked up the injury on Thursday which ruled him out of a return to former club Roma on Saturday.
After tests, Milan have now opted to operate on the player in an effort to get him back into action as soon as possible.
Without surgery the centre-back would have been out for around 45 days, but it is hoped that he'll now be available for the November 19 tie against Fiorentina.
Mexes, signed from Roma on a Bosman during the summer, had only just returned to action after recovering from knee ligament damage sustained last April.
