Edinson Cavani expressed his relief at qualification, while Salvatore Aronica expects a ban after being punched by Gonzalo Rodriguez.
“Villarreal played their game and we knew they wouldn’t give us anything,” said Cavani after the 2-0 win.
“Thank God we got through the group. Now we can focus on Serie A and notch up as many points as possible.”
There was a tense finale to the match at El Madrigal, as Gonzalo Rodriguez was caught on camera striking Aronica in an off the ball incident.
“Gonzalo was coming behind me and I didn’t see him,” explained the defender.
“He did it out of frustration, but these things are hard to swallow. UEFA will know what to do.
“As for my last-ditch tackle, it was my fault that the Villarreal counter-attack started, so I had to make up for it.
“We want to enjoy this result all the way. This shows everything we have achieved in these last few years.”
