Domenico Di Carlo has spoken of the challenge facing his Chievo players as they aim to start 2012 just as they finished 2011, by picking up a result in Rome.
In preparing his men for Week 17’s trip to face Roma, Di Carlo was keen on Friday to emphasise to the gathered media of the quality of the Verona club’s opponents, suggesting that few in the League can match them.
“The technical capabilities of Roma need not be discussed. I personally believe that in this way the Giallorossi are behind only Milan this season. And this demonstrates the difficulties facing Chievo in Rome.”
The Mussi Volanti begin the new year at the Stadio Olimpico, the ground that saw them finish 2011 with a strong performance in managing to hold Lazio to a 0-0 draw.
Goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino described it earlier this week as the club’s best away performance of the calendar year.
“It was a game that missed only a goal,” admitted Di Carlo. “I saw the team that I wanted. Determined, careful in all situations, good in setting up their own attacks.
“I believe that Chievo are fine and this is demonstrated by our journey. In the past seven [League] games we have lost only to Udinese and Milan and picked up three victories. We are in a healthy position, we must continue in this way.”
Di Carlo then reflected on what is required to beat Luis Enrique’s men.
“It will take a super Chievo, compact and strong. Above all else we must keep the pace high because if we lower it, Roma has the quality to hurt us.
“To emerge unscathed from Rome would be a further and perhaps decisive step towards our goal that seems so far away but is always survival.”
Chievo are rumoured to be taking action in the transfer market this month.
“First of all, I hope that this Chievo remains in tact. We have a competitive squad, it is clear that anyone who plays less would like to find space somewhere else.
“However, Chievo needs everyone, even absurdly, those who do not normally play. Chievo will be vigilant on January 30, 31, if there was a deal to do I believe that they can do it. But I repeat, the important thing is to maintain the current group.”
