Juventus Coach Gigi Del Neri has come out in support of Antonio Cassano, although he admits that every now and again the Sampdoria star falls on his sword.
Cassano's future is in serious doubt after he had a heated argument with Sampdoria President Riccardo Garrone at the club's training ground last week.
Sampdoria have asked to rescind Cassano's contract following his "gravely offensive and disrespectful behaviour towards" Garrone.
Interviewed on Radio anch'io lo sport, Del Neri offered his support to Cassano, who he coached at Sampdoria last season.
"As a player, Antonio isn't up for debate. I left him when I left Genova and I don't understand what has happened now.
"He has this sword upon which he falls every now and again, and that can be damaging. But the task of protecting him is part of a Coach's job.
"He is a bizarre lad. But if I had misunderstandings with him in the first few months, there was then an intense relationship.
"Cassano is a natural talent for his physical and technical qualities.
"I think and I hope that the relationship with Samp can be repaired.
"Respect is fundamental. His insobriety is grave: if it's true that he went against the President, the relationship will become difficult.
"I think it's an obligation to be firm, but if there is the slightest chance of recovering the situation then it should be put into practice."
