Martin Caceres hasn’t chosen the easiest number to wear at Juventus after opting for Paolo Montero’s mythical No 4.
The latter became an idol in Turin after his 1996 switch from Atalanta. He stayed with the Old Lady until 2005.
“Montero wore this shirt for many years,” Caceres, an Uruguayan like Montero, stated following his January arrival.
“For me it’s a point of pride, but at the same time it brings great responsibility. He made many fans happy while wearing this shirt and so I hope to do the same myself.
“I’ll look to do my best.”
The 24-year-old, who spent the 2009-10 season on loan at Juve, has returned to the club this month after moving from Sevilla.
A versatile defender, he can be used as a full-back and also in the middle which gives boss Antonio Conte the luxury of playing with a three or four man defence.
“The role isn’t important,” the international added. “The only thing that matters is playing in the first place.
“As far as I’m concerned there’s no difference between one position or another, but if I had to choose my preferred position is central defender.
“But I’ve played right-back, left-back and centre-back for Uruguay and it has always been fine. The most important thing is to play.”
