Pasquale Marino is determined to see a positive reaction from his Genoa side to recent travel-sickness, starting with Wednesday’s trip to Atalanta.
Since taking over at the Luigi Ferraris, Marino has instigated home wins over the likes of Udinese, Napoli and Lazio. Yet, in contrast to this has been the Grifone’s away form.
Three games on the road in the League for Marino has yielded three defeats, with 12 goals shipped. The 4-0 defeat at the weekend to Catania saw the side draw level with bottom club Novara for the current worst defensive record in the Division.
The team travel back to Bergamo this midweek for their rearranged fixture with Atalanta, a game that Marino believes is the perfect opportunity for Genoa to generate a reaction in.
“Ferocious competitiveness, from the first to the 90th minute, that is what I want,” declared Marino today. “We must react, it is down to us, rather than the opponents.
“Away from home, our level of performance has not been reached. It’s a matter of the mind that we need to solve, we need a different approach to the games, to change our attitude.
“We must reverse this course - I will not be satisfied until I see in away games the same intensity addressed at home matches.
“Otherwise, it will remain an incomplete job. We cannot hide behind the excuses, we must respond with results and a vicious competitiveness, not with words. Even if, even once, we also need virtue.
“I have always liked to give a precise aspect to a team - I can change the players but will always have a defined ‘musical score’ to follow.
“I hope to implement this soon, because for now I have not been about to, because of injuries, as in the case of [Alberto] Gilardino, who was giving us certain strength.”
Marino was asked about Stefano Colantuono’s side, one that has based a strong first half of the season off the back of an excellent home record.
“I do not think too much about the opponent, although they have their quality. I want an aggressive team, who is willing to fight back to reverse the current form with a level of performance.
“It is obvious that something is wrong in the head, but we cannot continue, the performances away from home have been indefensible.
“We can also say that the club have not asked of us the moon, we are not in a position to have particular anxieties, given the position in the table.
“No more bits and pieces, now we need something concrete, material, passion, concentration, fight. Because at home we have proven to have the personalities, but outside we have not had that same strength.”
