Lazio face Fiorentina tomorrow evening, but it’s still a mystery who will be in charge, as Edy Reja, Gigi De Canio and reportedly other tacticians are kept waiting.
“Until I am told anything, I will continue my work out of respect for the players and fans,” announced Reja just before leaving for this morning’s training session.
“If there is a press conference today, then I will do it. I’d like to point out I did not ask for Tare’s resignation.”
The club was thrown into turmoil on Wednesday afternoon when Reja submitted his written resignation , but agreed to travel with the side to Madrid for the Europa League tie against Atletico.
The Coach took control of Friday’s training session and was supposed to meet with President Claudio Lotito, but that was postponed to very late last night.
It is widely reported that Reja has asked to have one final game in charge against Fiorentina on Sunday evening before De Canio takes over.
However, Sky Sport Italia suggest both Coaches are being kept on tenterhooks by President Lotito, who is also holding negotiations with other potential replacements, including current youth academy boss Simone Inzaghi and an unnamed candidate.
Meanwhile, the reasons for this bitter split are emerging, as the Corriere dello Sport claims Reja has had a total breakdown of communication with director of sport Igli Tare for weeks.
It is well known they had a blazing row after the January transfer window closed with none of the reinforcements the Coach had asked for, instead weakening the side by selling Djibril Cissè to QPR.
Reja admitted to another “difference of opinion” after the 5-1 defeat to Palermo, based on his refusal to risk Giuseppe Biava and Marius Stankevicius when they were not 100 per cent fit.
The Corriere suggests Reja would only agree to stay at Lazio if Tare was removed from his post.
