Philippe Mexes picked up a three-match ban for punching Marco Borriello in the ribs, but also earned criticism from France manager Laurent Blanc.
Mexes had broken his way back into Les Bleus and was even considered for the role of captain in a friendly against Germany.
“What Mexes did was a gratuitous act and it is absolutely not acceptable,” said Blanc in a press conference.
“He has to realise that by doing things like this he damages himself and above all the team. Should he repeat this sort of behaviour at Euro 2012, I’d send him straight home.”
Mexes was caught on camera aiming a rabbit-punch in Borriello’s ribs during the 1-1 draw between Milan and Juventus.
Although given a three-match ban, Mexes attempted to defend his actions.
