Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri has suggested that he will rest players against Cagliari ahead of the Chelsea return.
The Azzurri will face the Rossoblu tomorrow evening and the tactician has defended his right to make changes to his usual starting XI.
“You lot call it a rotation policy, but I don’t,” he argued. “Given all of the games we have to play, it is right to stop a few players so that they are 100 per cent for the game after.”
Mazzarri is expected to make some attacking alterations which could see Goran Pandev get a starting shirt.
“Pandev may play,” he noted. “He’s always responded well and to the highest levels when he has been called upon.
“Edinson Cavani may be rested, we’ll see.”
Napoli are still targeting a top three finish in Serie A, as well as trying to progress to the last eight of the Champions League and the Coppa Italia Final.
“We have to think about as doing as well as possible in all three competitions,” the former Sampdoria man continued.
“But we have to just think about each game as they come. Cagliari will be tough and if you don’t play at your best then there is a risk that you’ll drop points.
“I want to see my players super concentrated.
“The greatest achievement of this squad so far is getting to March 8 still fighting on three fronts.”
Mazzarri was inevitably asked for his thoughts on Chelsea ahead of the second leg. Napoli will go into that game in London with a 3-1 advantage.
“I would say that Chelsea are superior to Arsenal,” the tactician claimed.
“Having seen the Arsenal game against Milan, you can imagine what might happen if we don’t play with the right mentality against them.”
The Rossoneri lost 3-0 at the Emirates, but still went through 4-3 on aggregate.
