President of the Italian Referees’ Association Marcello Nicchi claims introducing technology “would be the end of football.”
Recently the debate over goalline technology and even instant replays reared up again after the ball was not spotted crossing the line in Milan-Juventus.
“We are working to make this sport better, but without the help of video cameras or sensors,” insisted AIA chief Nicchi.
“The only reason to use video evidence would be to show referees where they went wrong so they don’t make the same mistakes again.
“I do not consider technology to be the right solution to resolve our problems. Electronic instruments would create a whole different sport, one that we wouldn’t like.
“The rules and their interpretation must remain in the hands of man, otherwise it would be the end of football.
“This debate over technology has been going on for years now and has become more rhetoric than anything else. I remain convinced only the referees must officiate a match.”
