Milan will go on to win the Scudetto following Champions League elimination, says former boss Carlo Ancelotti.
The Rossoneri only have Serie A to play for after Barcelona knocked them out of Europe and Juventus, their biggest title rivals, ended their Coppa Italia hopes.
“The Scudetto battle is uncertain,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “It’s up to Milan to win all of their games as they have a two-point lead. They’ll win the championship though.
“Their elimination from the Champions League will certainly give them a decisive push for victory in Serie A. The Rossoneri will have more mental energy for the title now.
“In 2004 we were knocked out by Deportivo after a 4-1 first leg win. That was a massive psychological shock, but we recovered by beating Empoli with a late goal. And then we won the Scudetto.”
While Milan started the campaign as favourites, the Old Lady – another club formerly coached by Ancelotti – have been the surprise package.
“It won’t be a drama if Juventus don’t win the League,” the Paris SG tactician noted. “Antonio Conte is only in his first season at the club and he’s already succeeded by competing with Milan for the title.”
Ancelotti also defended Rossoneri boss Massimiliano Allegri from the criticism of President Silvio Berlusconi, the club owner who reportedly wasn’t overly impressed with the side’s first leg performance against Barca.
“Milan did everything possible against Barcelona, but at the moment it is clear that they and Real Madrid are superior.
“Berlusconi, since 1986, has wanted entertainment and control of the way the side play.”
