Napoli have made it clear that links with Riccardo Montolivo of Fiorentina have nothing to do with reality.
"We have never asked for the player," Azzurri sporting director Riccardo Bigon noted on Monday evening.
"This rumour is totally unfounded, one that comes from the newspapers. All that it is good for is to fill column inches."
The San Paolo outfit are just one of many clubs who have been associated with the player given that he has refused to extend his current Viola deal which expires in 2012.
"Napoli consider Montolivo to be a great player, but I have never spoken to Fiorentina about bringing him here," Bigon added.
"There is no interest on our part and all of the stories that claim we are keen are to be considered as false.
"Montolivo is the captain of Fiorentina and I don't think that they are thinking of selling him," he concluded.
The Italian international recently ruled out a January switch, but it does seem likely that he will leave in the summer with Inter a leading candidate to sign him.
