Giuseppe Sannino has already secured safety for Siena, but asks his men for “a game that will make sure we’re remembered” by breaking records against Parma.
“We have equalled the club record of Serie A points and can increase that further to write our name in the history books,” said the Coach ahead of today’s 11.30 UK time kick-off.
“It is extra motivation, to play a game that will make sure we’re remembered, along with the passion and sacrifice my men have always shown to earn the applause of the fans. It depends on us if we are to make it a celebration.
“I felt immense joy at the final whistle in the Olimpico,” he said of the 1-1 draw with Lazio that mathematically ensured another season in Serie A.
“We saved ourselves without having to look at the other results, which makes us even more proud. In the locker room the lads soaked me with every available drink they had to hand! There was great satisfaction from the team, the staff and fans who followed us to Rome. It was a tough draw, but a deserved one.”
Parma have also booked their spot in the top flight for next season and so there will be no pressure on either side.
“It’s wonderful,” assured Sannino. “We will be able to face off without holding back or making calculations, but just for the pure joy of winning and at the final whistle can shake hands with a smile, complimenting the better side on the day.
“The thing I am most proud of this season is that I managed to get into the players’ heads. Anyone can be a Coach with a few books read here and there, but being a good Coach is difficult, as it means bringing your idea to the field through many minds.
“I have to thank my players who were able to transform my ideas into football on the pitch during my first Serie A season. I wasn’t used to having this many players at my disposal either, so it was a lesson for me too. I’m happy to be their Coach.”
Sannino’s press conference felt like a goodbye and he has been heavily linked with a move to Palermo, where he’d reunite with director Giorgio Perinetti.
“I had the opportunity to speak with the President in Rome. We gave each other two weeks to wait and then discuss plans when the season was over. We’ll look each other in the eye and go from there.”
