Genoa President Enrico Preziosi says Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu "could interest" the club.
Mutu's career in Florence looks to be over after he fell out with the Della Valle family.
He has been frozen out of the squad since last week and Fiorentina are now said to be considering legal action after the player allegedly failed to fulfill his contractual obligations
Asked about the prospect of signing Mutu, Preziosi told Sky Italia: "He could interest us. It would be an important opportunity for us.
"I still haven't had a chance to speak with Fiorentina, but if we were to meet I would say: 'Why not?'"
Preziosi also poured cold water on reports linking Domenico Criscito with a move to Napoli.
"He is a very important player for us, so he is 99 per cent staying. There are many teams interested in him but after Andrea Ranocchia's departure he has become even more decisive for us."
