Cagliari defender Davide Astori will join up with the Italy squad at their Euro 2012 training base today as cover for Andrea Barzagli.
The Juventus defender is a doubt for the tournament after picking up a calf strain in Friday’s 3-0 loss to Russia.
Barzagli will undergo tests on Friday to assess his recovery before a decision is taken on whether to keep him in the squad or not.
If Barzagli is sent home, then Astori will replace him in the Azzurri 23 in time for Sunday’s opener against Spain.
Astori was put on stand-by on Monday after Andrea Ranocchia, the last defender cut from the preliminary squad, was made unavailable because of injury.
