New Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella hopes to still have Stevan Jovetic at his disposal for 2012-13 campaign.
The tactician signed a two-year contract with the Viola today and he’s keen for the club’s best player to remain.
“Jovetic is an incredible player, of the highest level, and I hope I will be able to Coach him,” he said at his unveiling. “I’ll speak to everyone though, as I need to see if certain players are motivated and ready to stay.”
Montella was a wanted man on the market after his success at Catania this season – and a return to former club Roma was a possibility before they hired Zdenek Zeman instead.
“There were a lot of negotiations,” he added. “You can talk about some, others no. With regards to Roma, it didn’t happen for a variety of reasons.”
The former striker prefers to use a 4-3-3 system, but that shape would not suit Jovetic should he remain in Tuscany.
“I don’t think a winning tactical model exists, otherwise everyone would use it,” he added. “I believe in a method and a certain type of how to approach games.
“Jovetic could adapt to a 4-3-3, but he wouldn’t express himself to his best. Playing alongside a striker, however, would see him give a lot more.”
The Viola have had some difficult seasons since Cesare Prandelli left in 2010 and Montella follows in the footsteps of Sinisa Mihajlovic and Delio Rossi.
“I’m here with great enthusiasm. I want to start a new era in a club who have great faith in me and who did a lot to get me here. I thank everyone.
“I grew up near here, in Empoli, so I think that I already know what to expect from this environment.
“Fiorentina have confidence in me and they have shown a desire to get back their status and proper League position. There is a real desire to do well. There are pros and cons, but I’m ready.”
Montella is eager to have time with his players before the new term kicks off, but he knows that is unlikely to happen.
“I’d like the squad to be completed by the time we start pre-season, but I know that it will be tough on the transfer market. I already know that won’t be possible.”
