Davide Astori has his sights set on World Cup 2014 after the Cagliari stopper just missed out on Euro 2012 selection.
The defender was axed from the initial 32-man squad before being recalled to Poland as cover for Andrea Barzagli.
But Italy eventually decided to keep faith with the Juventus man after he showed good signs of recovery from a calf strain.
“Obviously I’m disappointed about the European Championship, especially as I was so close to being selected,” stated the 25-year-old to the Corriere della Sera.
“I thought that I’d make it after being called up for the second time. But there are no problems, I’m young and I’ll have other opportunities.
“My objective though is to return to the national side in the future – but this time on a permanent basis…”
Astori is a well respected centre-back and his name has been linked with the likes of Milan and Juventus in the past.
“I have a meeting with Cagliari planned for the next few days and we’ll decide what to do,” he responded when asked about where he would be playing next term.
“I wouldn’t have a problem in staying if there was a desire to construct an important project. I’ve been linked with some big clubs, but it is still too soon to talk about a move.”
