Andrea Pirlo admits it was “one of my worst performances” against Ireland, but the important thing is that Italy went through.
“It was one of the most exciting nights, as we scored and then heard Spain had got a goal, so became a little worried in the final minutes. Luckily it all went well,” said the midfielder.
“Now the games that really count are here and we are playing some decisive matches. We’ll give it our all.
“It doesn’t matter who our opponents are in the quarter-finals. We knew it was going to be a tough group, but we are a strong side and can go all the way.”
The Azzurri beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 , but Pirlo lost the ball several times and struggled in the switch back to a 4-3-1-2 system.
“It was one of my worst performances from an individual level, but the important thing was that the team go forward.”
