Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri is remaining cautious about the potential ability of Lorenzo Insigne. “Let’s leave him alone.”
The home-grown player will appear for the Azzurri this season after spending the last two campaigns on loan at Foggia and Pescara.
The Under-21 international only further enhanced his reputation on Friday with the winner in a 3-2 friendly win over Bayern Munich .
“Insigne is not lacking the skills, but he has to prove that he can withstand the pressure of this environment,” the tactician stated on Monday.
“A young player can only become a top player when he has the character to support his talents. He needs to keep his feet on the ground, he needs to perform with consistency and we have to leave him in peace.”
Insigne is one of a number of new faces at the Stadio San Paolo this term, but the tactician still thinks the squad could be improved.
“I have given my ideas to the club,” he added. “It’s clear that the Coach always wants the best, but a new signing has to be better than what you already have.
“We have the right number of players in the squad, but we need a wide player who can get past their man.
“Perhaps there is more need of that player on the right, but someone who can play on the left and the right would be perfect.
“A forward? If Edu Vargas and Insigne prove that they are suitable for the project then it is useless going out and buying someone else in attack. Otherwise there would just be some confusion.”
Napoli have become major contenders in Italian football over the last few years and Mazzarri wants that trend to continue.
“Our objective? All I will say is that we will give our all.
“It doesn’t get better than winning at Napoli. We are ready for anything. For the Scudetto I would even stop smoking for a while...
“I’ve looked to change the system to a 3-5-2 to fire up the players. Football is about motivation, without it you run the risk of putting on a terrible show.
“I’m looking to do something different on a tactical level in order to surprise our opponents.”
