Inter’s Samuele Longo is aiming to be better than Italy Under-21 teammate Mattia Destro one day.
Destro burst onto the scene last season whilst on loan at Siena to earn a big-money move to Roma this summer, and Inter’s Longo believes that his future can be similar.
The pair were teammates in Inter’s youth team in 2009 and briefly at Genoa, and now play alongside each other for the Italy Under-21s.
Longo, 20, has started to feature on the fringes of Andrea Stramaccioni’s Inter during pre-season, prompting suggestions that the striker could enjoy a fruitful campaign, much like Destro’s last year.
“Can I follow in Destro’s footsteps? Maybe I can imitate him in the sense of doing as well as he has done – and why not, maybe even better,” he told Inter Channel.
“I work every day and hope one day to be better than him.”
Longo’s pre-season emergence has resulted in him being linked with a loan move and the youngster wouldn’t be averse to such a deal if it meant increased playing time.
“It is not for me to decide. I am just trying to do my best and take advantage of every opportunity given to me.
“If Inter decide to send me on loan then I will be happy to go somewhere where I can play regularly.”
On Wednesday, Longo will hope to receive his second Under-21 cap as Devis Mangia’s Azzurrini face the Netherlands.
