Milan's new signing Mark Van Bommel reveals his move was “a purely sporting decision and I am not afraid of competition.”
The Rossoneri had said they were not interested in the Bayern Munich midfielder due to his age, but changed their minds after losing Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo to injury this week.
“I am happy to play for Milan, partly as it's unusual for such a prestigious club to look for a 33-year-old,” he told Spox.de.
“It was a purely sporting decision and I am not afraid of competition that I might find in the Rossoneri squad.
“I had many great moments at Bayern and must admit it is a little sad to leave at this moment, but I have faith in my abilities and think I can do well in Italy.
“I do think Bayern Munich could've still used a player like me.”
Coach Massimiliano Allegri has said it is likely one or both of the new Dutch signings, Urby Emanuelson and Van Bommel, will start in the Coppa Italia quarter-final against Sampdoria tomorrow.
Absent for that match are Marco Amelia, Daniele Bonera, Alessandro Nesta, Gianluca Zambrotta, Massimo Ambrosini, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Mathieu Flamini, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Rodney Strasser and Pippo Inzaghi.
Emanuelson takes the number 28 shirt, while Van Bommel will wear 4.
Milan squad: Abbiati, Di Fabio, Roma, Abate, Antonini, Ely, Jankulovski, Oddo, Papastathopoulos, Thiago Silva, Yepes, Calvano, Emanuelson, Merkel, Van Bommel, Cassano, Ibrahimovic, Oduamadi, Pato, Robinho
