Maurizio Zamparini explains why he hired Gian Piero Gasperini at Palermo. “Giuseppe Sannino got everything wrong. It was a huge mistake.”
The President said he would stand by the Coach, but wielded the axe this evening after one point from the first three rounds.
“Sannino did not have the team in hand and didn’t believe in our chances because he couldn’t keep hold of it,” Zampa told Radio Radio.
“He was meant to be The Gerenal, but he didn’t manage it. He wasn’t in sync with the side and I noted the players didn’t go towards him to celebrate when they scored the goal.
“Sannino’s sides were famous for their determination, character and hard work, but I didn’t see any of those characteristics against difficult opponents.
“At times just five games are enough to evaluate a tactician. I focused on promising young Coaches because I cannot afford big stars. If I could, then I’d call someone like Antonio Conte.
“In my view, he got the pre-season fitness training wrong too. I didn’t decide it, but it was all down to his staff. He got everything wrong.
“In fact, I think it is a shame for modern football that a Coach needs another four collaborators. Now I have to pay five men, plus Gasperini’s staff.”
Under Italian rules, Sannino cannot take charge of a different Serie A side during the same season and Zamparini must continue paying his contract until they can agree a mutual rescission.
Not content with blaming his Coach, President Zamparini also shifted the responsibility for the whole affair on to director Giorgio Perinetti, who had worked with Sannino at Siena.
“It was a huge mistake planning pre-season training, one made also by Perinetti. Is the director at risk? No.
“From Tuesday we will go into a pre-match ritiro training camp for a week and hope to get back on track straight away. Gasperini will be presented to the media and will not leave here after three games. He was already a candidate for the job before Stefano Pioli.”
Pioli started last season and was fired before the Serie A campaign even began.
“I know, I made the journalists happy by firing the Coach, but it’s better to sack someone than lose and end up in Serie B.”
