Antonio Conte's comeback, Napoli's awful record against top clubs, Lazio's lack of away inspiration and Catania's taste for Siena are among the Week 16 stats rounded up by Susy Campanale.
Antonio Conte returned to the Juventus bench after 122 days. Stephan Lichtsteiner’s seventh Serie A goal was his second of the campaign.
Palermo had never previously lost at home under Gian Piero Gasperini, earning three wins and two stalemates. The Rosanero have lost all eight of this season’s games in which they conceded the opening goal.
Napoli’s record against big clubs is disastrous, as they haven’t won any away to a side currently in the top five over the last five years, drawing four and losing 21.Their track record with Inter at San Siro in all competitions is eight wins, 14 draws and 48 defeats. The Nerazzurri had lost their previous three official encounters with the Partenopei and failed to find the net.
Edinson Cavani on 39 and Diego Milito on 29 have scored more official goals in the 2012 calendar year than any other Italian club players.
Cavani had never previously scored for Napoli against Inter in Serie A, though he did net twice for Palermo and bagged a brace in the Coppa Italia too. Samir Handanovic marked his 200th Serie A appearance, achieved with Udinese, Treviso, Lazio and Inter.
Roma put together four victories on the trot for the first time since January. Leandro Castan broke his Serie A duck at the 10th appearance, while Francesco Totti took his career total to 221, now just four shy of Gunnar Nordahl. Totti has put 13 past Fiorentina, 11 of them at the Olimpico. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo has netted eight times this season, 27 Serie A goals overall.
The Giallorossi have scored 17 goals in the first half of games this season, including 13 in the opening 30 minutes. Castan became the first player to net against Fiorentina in the opening 17 minutes.
Fiorentina’s unbeaten run came crashing to a halt after seven wins and two stalemates. The Viola have only won one of their last 21 trips to the Olimpico in all competition, in April 2012, losing 16. They have also lost 12 of the last 14 editions of this fixture.
The Tuscans are set play specialists, netting six from corners and three from indirect free kicks this term. Facundo Roncaglia took his total Serie A tally to two goals, while it was the third for Mounir El Hamdaoui.
Torino have scraped only one point from their last five games in all competition. Milan are unbeaten in Turin since a 1-0 result in 2001, managing four victories and 11 stalemates. Mario Alberto Santana took his career tally to 25 Serie A goals, 39 for Rolando Bianchi.
The Rossoneri hadn’t notched up three consecutive League wins since May. Robinho went up to 22 goals and Antonio Nocerino 18, the midfielder finding the net for the first time since a 4-1 win at Siena on April 29. Giampaolo Pazzini got his 86th, including six this term.
Stephan El Shaarawy has scored 13 Serie A goals this season, but 11 of them were in the second half. Nocerino scored Milan’s first top flight header of the campaign. Robinho has either set up or scored in each of the last four League games.
Udinese hadn’t won away to Sampdoria in Serie A since a 3-1 result in May 2004, taking their total record here to 17 defeats, 10 draws and five victories. It was only Francesco Guidolin’s third away win of the season in all competition after 3-2 successes at Roma and Liverpool. The Coach had never previously won at Marassi.
Antonio Di Natale has found the net in four of his last five League meetings with Samp, a total seven against this club in his career out of 162. Danilo has scored twice in Serie A, both of them headers from a Di Natale set piece. He also confirmed the Friulani have the most prolific defenders, as eight of their 23 goals were scored by the back line. Udinese had not kept a clean sheet since a 1-0 home win over Pescara on October 21, conceding 22 goals in 11 official outings.
Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti has not conceded in 360 minutes of football between Serie A and the Europa League. However, the Biancocelesti haven’t scored on their Serie A travels since a win at Pescara, firing blanks in their last four trips outside the Olimpico.
Bologna have a strong record at the Dall’Ara against Lazio, earning 40 wins, 16 draws and only 13 defeats in all competition. There hadn’t been a 0-0 in this fixture since February 25 1990. Libor Kozak is the fourth Aquile player sent off this season after Cristian Ledesma, Stefano Mauri and Hernanes.
Cagliari are without a League win in six, snatching only two points. The Sardinians have beaten Chievo only once in their last eight encounters, home and away, including four defeats. The Flying Donkeys had lost all six of their away games this season, but have now won two on the trot – something that hadn’t happened in two years.
Alberto Paloschi’s 18th Serie A goal was his fourth in two games. He has a ratio of a goal every 48 minutes of football this season, better than anyone in the top five European Leagues. Chievo scored with their only two shots on target at the Is Arenas.
Atalanta ended a run of three consecutive defeats, but are without a home stalemate in 15 games – winning 10. German Denis scored his 39th Serie A goal, the second in as many games, but it was also the first header to beat Parma this season. Federico Peluso’s third top flight strike was his first since December 21 2011, Atalanta 4-1 Cesena.
Parma hadn’t lost two League fixtures on the bounce since October 2011. Their away form has been a problem, picking up just one point from the last four trips outside the Tardini. Amauri took his career tally in Serie A to 70. Parma haven’t won in Bergamo since a 1-0 result in 2001, managing only three draws from eight games here.
Pescara get back to winning ways and keep a clean sheet after five consecutive defeats between Serie A and Coppa Italia, in which they conceded a total 17 goals. It is Coach Cristiano Bergodi’s first win for the Delfini and in his entire Serie A career. Elvis Abbruscato got his eighth top flight goal, but it was the first for Ante Vukusic at the seventh appearance.
Genoa have suffered 10 defeats this season, more than any other club on a par with Pescara. The Grifone have lost eight of their last nine games – seven of the total eight under Coach Gigi Del Neri.
Siena fell to a second consecutive home defeat, the first time it has happened this season. Alessandro Rosina scored his 24th Serie A strike, where he hadn’t found the net since Parma 2-2 Cesena on February 20 2011. Francesco Valiani has been involved in all of Siena’s last five goals, scoring one and providing four assists.
Catania hadn’t won on their travels since another trip to Siena, a 1-0 result on January 22, followed by six defeats and eight draws. Palermo are now the only side without an away victory. Lucas Castro got his second Serie A goal, the 17th for Gonzalo Bergessio.
The Elefantini are comeback kings, fighting back to earn an extra 10 points from losing situations this season.
