Juventus see out 2012 by shattering another Serie A record, Zdenek Zeman does it again for Milan and Parma win their first away derby in 14 years as Susy Campanale sums up the Week 18 stats.
Juventus set a new all-time record with 94 Serie A points in the calendar year, more than Fabio Capello’s Bianconeri on 93 in 2005. They achieved this with six consecutive victories between Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia in which the Turin giants conceded only one goal. They’ve also notched up 44 points by Week 18, two more than Jose Mourinho’s Treble-winning Inter in 2009-10.
Roma hadn’t beaten Milan at the Olimpico in Serie A since a 2-1 result in 2008, followed by three draws and a defeat. The last time the Rossoneri leaked four at the Olimpico in Serie A was a 5-0 defeat in 1998, where Zdenek Zeman was again on the bench. The only other occasion in which this fixture ended with six goals was a 3-3 in 1958.
Milan have conceded more headers than any other Serie A side this season (nine) and Roma have nodded in 10, also a campaign record. The San Siro team have let in eight goals from corners or indirect free kicks.
The Giallorossi have scored in each of their last 32 official home games for a total 72 goals. Nicolas Burdisso’s 10th Serie A goal was his first since October 29 2011, which was also against Milan in Rome. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo took his total to 28 top flight goals, his 10th of the campaign in all competition. Erik Lamela celebrated his second career brace for 15 Serie A goals and went up to 10 for the season in 14 appearances, all without penalties.
Milan fell to their first defeat since a 3-1 at home to Fiorentina on November 11, having earned a draw and four wins. Massimiliano Allegri’s men have scored in their last 17 away matches for a total 39 goals, while Giampaolo Pazzini went up to 87 in Serie A and Bojan Krkic nine.
Alessandro Matri took his career total to 58 top flight goals. Of his nine braces, two have been scored against Cagliari, as he also put two past them in February 2011. Mirko Vucinic took his tally to 86. Juve have received six penalties this term and Arturo Vidal missed two of them, Andrea Pirlo wasting another. Cagliari have been awarded six spot-kicks and only converted three. The Turin giants have not conceded more than one goal in each of their last 22 away League fixtures.
Cagliari are without a League victory since beating Siena 4-2 on October 31, managing only two points from eight rounds. This was their fifth defeat on the bounce, the worst run for the Sardinians since 2008. Mauricio Pinilla got his 20th Serie A goal, his first since September 30 against Pescara.
Inter earned only their second home stalemate of the season after a 2-2 with Cagliari. Esteban Cambiasso went up to 36 career goals, three in eight encounters with Genoa. Genoa haven’t conquered San Siro since a 3-1 result in 1994, emerging with seven defeats and three draws in all competition.
Atalanta had not previously shared the spoils in Bergamo this season after five wins and three losses. However, Udinese have drawn four of their last five visits to the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia, but hadn’t scored here in 393 minutes of football. The Friulani have nine stalemates this season, more than any other club. German Denis has scored five of Atalanta’s last seven goals. Luis Muriel’s eighth Serie A strike was his first since a brace in Lecce 4-2 Roma on April 7.
Pescara registered their second victory under Cristiano Bergodi, along with three defeats. Mervan Celik got his second Serie A goal, while it was Eugenio Togni’s debut strike. Catania continue the trend of not winning two top flight away games on the trot since 1960. This was their first visit to Pescara in Serie A, but between B and C they won twice here in 13 attempts. Pablo Barrientos got his seventh Serie A goal.
Parma last won the local derby away to Bologna with another 2-1 result in 1998, followed by six losses and four draws. Jaime Valdes marked his 15th Serie A strike, the second in as many rounds, while Nicola Sansone went up to three in eight appearances.
Bologna were unbeaten at the Dall’Ara since Inter’s 3-1 result here on October 28, putting together two wins and as many stalemates. The Rossoblu hadn’t scored against Parma home or away in 454 minutes of Emilia-Romagna Derby football. Frederik Sorensen got his second Serie A goal. The Ducali ended a run of one point from four away games and marked their 300th victory in Serie A history, excluding play-offs. Meanwhile, it was Bologna’s 700th Serie A defeat.
Palermo have scraped only one point from the last four rounds and haven’t scored at the Barbera for 210 minutes of League football. Fiorentina have lost just one in 12 rounds, winning eight of them, and are +14 compared to their tally at this time last season. Stevan Jovetic bagged his sixth Serie A brace for a total 30 goals. Gonzalo Rodriguez got his fifth top flight strike with the Viola’s seventh penalty of the campaign – more than any other club. The Tuscans have scored two or more goals in their last eight League outings.
Sampdoria fell to a third consecutive defeat despite the change of management. Delio Rossi has lost eight of his 10 League meetings with Lazio at the helm of Salernitana, Palermo and now Samp. The Biancocelesti extended their unbeaten Serie A run to five wins and two draws, conceding just one goal in the last six games, but it was their first away victory after two defeats and two stalemates in which they failed to score for 414 minutes of football. Lazio hadn’t conquered Marassi in the top flight since another 1-0 result in 2004, managing only one point from six visits. Hernanes took his career total to 26 Serie A goals, seven in the current campaign.
Siena fell to a fourth consecutive defeat, but it was also the first time they have lost three League games in a row on home turf since 2006. Napoli rediscover their smiles after four consecutive defeats in all competition. Christian Maggio’s 30th Serie A goal was his first since August 26 against Palermo.
Edinson Cavani went up to 96 in the top flight and ends 2012 as the most prolific at Italian club level with 42 goals.
Torino ended a run of two points from six games in all competition. The Granata have never lost at home to Chievo between Serie A and B, winning five and drawing four. Alessandro Gazzi had only ever scored two Serie A goals before this season and has now doubled that tally. The Flying Donkeys failed to match their club record of four consecutive Serie A victories set in 2002.
