Vincenzo Montella’s Fiorentina ended 2012 in third place and he reveals his plans for the New Year. “We started from nothing.”
The Tuscans have not only impressed with some of the most entertaining football in Serie A, but are also in joint third position and earned praise from PSG Coach Carlo Ancelotti.
“I thank Ancelotti and his words make me very proud,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.
“I was a guest at his Chelsea side before I became a full Coach, so his working method was a reference point for me.”
The 38-year-old former Roma striker had started out as a youth team tactician, but was propelled to the main Giallorossi job in February 2011 and then went on to a successful spell at Catania.
“Did I expect such a strong start? To be honest, I still feel that I am ‘unripe’ as a Coach. In fact, I hope to remain like this, as it can be an important key to success, knowing that you are always developing and maturing.
“With Fiorentina we started from nothing with club owners who wanted to reboot the project. Our objectives for 2013 are to continue giving our all and remain on this level.”
The Viola have above all impressed with a high quality midfield selection from around the world.
“Borja Valero is as intelligent on the field as off it. He manages to read and interpret the game before anyone else.
“I already knew Gonzalo Rodriguez, as he had often played in the Champions League and I shared this decision with the club to invest in him.”
