Alessandro Matri isn't the first to score in his socks, Pablo Daniel Osvaldo isn't a penalty-taker and Chievo aren't fond of facing Inter, as Susy Campanale rounds up the Serie A Week 24 stats.
Alessandro Matri is not the first player to score in Serie A with his sock, as Preben Elkjaer did it for Hellas Verona against Juventus on October 14, 1984. In that case, Elkjaer lost his boot during a tackle, but carried on dribbling past another player to fire in the angled drive. Matri has scored six Serie A goals this season, five in the last five games, but four of them came from Arturo Vidal assists.
Fiorentina’s poor record against Juventus continues, as they have won just one of their last 23 League meetings, home and away. That was a 3-2 result in Turin in March 2008, along with 11 defeats and 11 draws. The Viola hadn’t lost three away games on the bounce in Serie A since a run of four in December 2011, but this is the first time they have failed to score in their 13 official travels this season. Vincenzo Montella has never beaten Juventus, managing just two points from five attempts.
Mirko Vucinic hadn’t netted from outside the box since March 2012, which was also against Fiorentina, but took his Serie A tally to 88. Angelo Alessio has won 10 of his games on the Juventus bench standing in for Antonio Conte, losing two and drawing two. Claudio Marchisio marked his 200th match in a Juventus jersey.
Javier Zanetti’s 593rd Serie A appearance (596 including play-offs) allow him to overtake Gianluca Pagliuca’s career tally, putting him second in the all-time charts behind Paolo Maldini on 647. Dejan Stankovic played his first match since the 3-1 defeat to Parma on May 2, 2012.
Inter have won their last seven consecutive home games with Chievo, scoring 19 goals and conceding nine. However, the Verona club managed to find the net after firing blanks in their last four meetings, home and away. The Flying Donkeys have conceded more goals from corners than any other team this season, going up to 10, while they haven’t netted more than once in each of their last eight outings.
Diego Milito scored his first goal of 2013, his 60th in 111 League games with Inter, the 84th career strike in Serie A. Antonio Cassano also scored against Chievo earlier this season, meaning he has put six goals past this team, and went up to 94 in Serie A. Andrea Ranocchia’s eighth Serie A goal was his second of the campaign, matching his personal best set in 2009-10 with Bari and 2010-11 at Genoa. The defender had also netted his debut Serie A strike against Chievo in 2009. Luca Rigoni got his sixth Serie A goal, the first since Fiorentina 1-2 Chievo on April 1 2012.
Roma are without a League victory since beating Milan 4-2 on December 22, followed by four defeats and two draws. The Giallorossi hadn’t gone six rounds without a win since April 2005. They haven’t conquered Marassi since a 3-0 victory in May 2008, followed by just two draws and two defeats. The Lupi’s 23 played matches in Serie A this season have involved a total 92 goals.
Delio Rossi has won his last six home meetings with the Giallorossi, representing Lazio, Fiorentina and Sampdoria. Samp register a three-game unbeaten streak on home turf for the first time in Serie A since January 2011. Marcelo Estigarribia got his third Serie A goal, the second for Gianluca Sansone and Mauro Icardi’s eighth. Sansone scored and provided two assists on his Blucerchiati debut. Erik Lamela went up to 16 goals, 11 of them in the current campaign.
Pablo Daniel Osvaldo has only ever converted four penalties in his entire career, two of them in Serie A. This was the first time he had taken a spot-kick for Roma when Francesco Totti was still on the pitch.
Sergio Floccari has netted five in his last seven official appearances for Lazio, but it was also his sixth career goal past Napoli, who are his favourite victims. The Biancocelesti have still not won any of their six Serie A matches played without either Miroslav Klose or Hernanes this season, drawing three. Stefano Mauri celebrated his 300th top flight match, while it was the 200th for Edinson Cavani and Gokhan Inler.
Hugo Campagnaro scored his first Serie A goal since October 1 2011 against Inter, taking him up to seven. Napoli’s last League victory at the Olimpico was 1-0 in October 2008, followed by two draws and two defeats. The Aquile had not drawn at home in Serie A since a 1-1 with Torino on October 31. In the final 15 minutes this season, Lazio’s games have involved 15 goals (seven scored, eight conceded) and Napoli 19 (12 in favour).
For only the second time this season – the other being in October against Udinese and Juventus – Cavani failed to score for two rounds. Walter Mazzarri has never won at the Olimpico against Lazio, losing five of his nine visits.
Gianluca Sansone scored a goal and provided two assists on his debut for Sampdoria. Delio Rossi has won his last five meetings with Roma.
Mario Balotelli has never missed a penalty in his entire career, converting 13 in all competition. Milan are unbeaten against Cagliari since a 1-0 result here in October 1998, registering 16 wins and five stalemates in all venues. Home and away, the Rossoneri had won their previous eight meetings with Cagliari. The Sardinians have conceded 15 goals in the last 15 minutes of their ties. Victor Ibarbo’s fourth Serie A strike was his first since April 25 2012, a 3-0 win over Catania.
The Rossoneri have amassed 34 points in the last 16 rounds and have scored 18 goals in the last 15 minutes of their games, more than any other club.
Genoa have won at the Tardini just once in all competition, drawing nine and losing the other 10. The lone victory was 3-2 in April 2010. Parma finally kept a clean sheet after conceding 13 in their last nine matches since a 1-0 win over Inter on November 26, but are without a win in five. The only other time this season the Ducali failed to score on home turf was another 0-0 with Siena in November.
Catania have never won away to Atalanta in Serie A, drawing seven and losing six visits. They have been able to score just once in their last five games here, as five of the last six editions have been draws. Atalanta’s games have involved fewer goals than any other team this season, just 54 in 23 rounds. This was their first clean sheet since beating Napoli 1-0 on October 31, having conceded 25 goals in 15 official games. The Orobici are still without a victory in front of their home fans in 2013, earning three draws and one loss. Stefano Colantuono has only beaten Catania once, along with six stalemates and four defeats.
Both teams have scored in five of the total six editions of Bologna-Siena, as the visitors only failed to find the net in last season’s 1-0 loss. Bologna’s last eight Serie A matches have seen a total 30 goals. Panagiotis Kone’s seventh Serie A goal was his second in as many rounds. Siena picked up points for two weeks running, something they had not managed since November, and Innocent Emeghara has now scored in both his starts. Beppe Iachini has only won one of his 25 career Serie A games, losing 16.
Palermo have scraped just four draws from their last 11 official matches, two points from five League games at the Stadio Barbera. Pescara have never won away to Palermo between Serie A, B and the Coppa Italia with a grand total of eight draws and 11 defeats. These sides have the worst strike forces in the Division, as Palermo scored 21 and Pescara 20. Diego Fabbrini’s third top flight goal was his first since Catania 0-2 Udinese on May 13 2012, while it was Birkir Bjarnason’s second.
Torino’s unbeaten streak came to an end after three wins and four draws. Antonio Di Natale’s drought continues, as he is without a goal in four rounds. Udinese have won their last four Stadio Friuli outings on the trot, conceding a grand total of one goal and scoring eight. Toro haven’t conquered Udine since a 1-0 in October 1984, followed by six draws and six losses, the last four being consecutive. All four of Roberto Pereyra’s Serie A goals have been at the Stadio Friuli.
