Sampdoria’s Andrea Poli insists his dream to become a regular at international level will never become an obsession.
Poli is being tipped to be part of Cesare Prandelli’s plans for World Cup 2014, but the midfielder says he just has to concentrate on his club career.
“The national team should not be an obsession,” the former Inter player told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “It has never been that for me.
“Instead, I’ve always seen it as a natural continuation of a process that is going on with my club team. Therefore, I firstly have to do well with the Sampdoria.
“I always aim to give my maximum, then if the Coach considers me for selection then I would have to be satisfied with that.”
Poli, understood to be on the transfer radar of Juventus, has one full international cap so far. Prandelli used him in the August 2012 2-1 friendly defeat to England.
Italy are next in action on March 21 in a Geneva friendly against Brazil.
