Marco Materazzi says that missing out on Europa League qualification may be a blessing for the future of former club Inter.
The Nerazzurri’s hopes of finishing in the top three took a knock on Sunday after they let a 3-1 lead slip in a 4-3 loss to Atalanta.
“The Inter squad at present is not worth the Champions League,” the 2006 World Cup winner told Gazzetta TV.
“The Europa League? The Champions League is the European competition that helps you to build a team because of the level of income it provides.
“Speaking as a fan and a former player, I’ll say that it is better to start rebuilding the side, perhaps without the Europa League.
“That is because Inter, this term, are paying the price for starting pre-season early because of their European commitments.”
Inter are fifth in the table, but Lazio and Roma have a game in hand over them given tonight’s Derby della Capitale.
