Reto Ziegler admits Fenerbahce “didn’t play the best football,” but got past Lazio to reach the Europa League semi-final.
The 2-0 first leg victory in Istanbul proved crucial, as a 1-1 draw at the Olimpico behind closed doors sealed qualification.
“We played well in Istanbul and it was tough today, as we knew Lazio were in good shape after the Rome Derby,” Juventus-owned Ziegler told Sky Sport Italia.
“We didn’t play the best football, but I think at the end of the day we deserved to go through because we stayed united and believed to the end.”
For the third year in a row, there are no Italian teams in the European semi-finals.
“Italian football is one of the best in Europe, so it’s a bad year for Italy, as there are quality players in Serie A.”
