The Toro derby drought continues, as do Catania’s Milan curse and a Fiorentina purple patch, as Susy Campanale sums up the week’s intriguing stats.
Arturo Vidal has scored four in three games after ending a 15-round drought. Kamil Glik saw red in both encounters with Juventus this season, while Claudio Marchisio got his third goal against the Granata in two games, making them his favourite victims. The Bianconeri notched up a seventh straight win and are now one point away from the Scudetto. They haven’t conceded in 277 minutes of football, letting in seven goals in their last 15 games.
Torino haven’t even scored in eight Serie A editions of the Derby della Mole, losing seven, as Benoit Cauet was the last to find the net in a 2-2 draw in February 2002, but conceded 14. Toro haven’t beaten Juve since a 2-1 result in April 1995, followed by four stalemates and 10 losses.
Giampiero Ventura’s side have one point from the last five rounds. Toro have conceded 37 goals in the second half, 20 in the last 15 minutes, 18 in the last 10 and incredibly 16 in the final seven minutes of their games.
Milan ended a run of two points from three rounds. Mathieu Flamini set a new personal best of three goals for the season, six in his Serie A career. The Frenchman scored just four times in his first 116 appearances for Milan, but three in the last three rounds. Rossoneri midfielders have contributed five goals in the last five games.
Giampaolo Pazzini’s ninth top flight brace took his career total to 95 goals. Mario Balotelli’s 28th Serie A goal was his eighth in nine games for the Rossoneri and confirmed he has been on the scoresheet in every home tie. In all senior competition at club and international level, Balotelli has converted 16 penalties for a 100 per cent record. Milan conceded 16 goals from set plays this season.
Catania are without a win in five and have never beaten Milan at San Siro between Serie A and B, managing six draws from 18 visits. Home and away, Catania haven’t beaten Milan since a 2-1 Coppa Italia win at San Siro in December 2007, followed by seven losses and five stalemates.
Gonzalo Bergessio has scored five of his total nine goals this season outside the Massimino. Nicola Legrottaglie took his career tally up to 22 Serie A goals, more than any other defender still in activity, and had also scored against his old club back in December. Milan have scored 20 goals in the last 15 minutes of their games, whereas Catania conceded 18.
Javier Zanetti was stretchered off during his 602nd Serie A appearance, only his 26th substitution. The last time he picked up an injury during a game was in a 0-0 at Fiorentina on April 22 2012.
Palermo had won only one of their previous 15 games against Inter, home and away, along with five draws and nine defeats. The Nerazzurri also lost at the Barbera last season, 4-3. Inter have lost eight of their last 11 away matches in Serie A, winning two and drawing the other. The Nerazzurri lost five of the last seven rounds.
Fabrizio Miccoli’s 161st Serie A game in a Palermo jersey matches Mattia Cassani’s club record. Josip Ilicic found the net for the fifth game in a row and with 10 sets a new personal best. The Rosanero are unbeaten in five, amassing 11 points.
The Viola hadn’t won at Marassi since December 2008, which was their only victory here since 1990 along with 11 defeats and four stalemates. Sampdoria were unbeaten against the Tuscans, home and away, in four encounters.
Vincenzo Montella’s men have kept three clean sheets in seven games, scoring 17 and conceding nine. The Blucerchiati are without a win in seven, managing only three points, and conceded eight goals in their last three home matches.
Fiorentina have won six of the last eight rounds and have the most prolific attack in the second half of the season with 29 goals. Juan Cuadrado, Adem Ljajic and Alberto Aquilani were all on the scoresheet for the second game in a row.
Gokhan Inler had also scored against Pescara back in December’s 6-1 victory, so he has put three goals past them this season and they become his favourite targets. Goran Pandev has netted three times in the last four rounds, 61 in Serie A during his career. Blerim Dzemaili went up to 10 for his career, five in as many appearances.
Napoli most recently visited the Stadio Adriatico in Serie B, winning 1-0 in November 2006. The Partenopei had kept one clean sheet in their previous seven games, but Pescara have now conceded in each of their last 15. The Delfini have lost all seven of their home ties in 2013 and are now only three shy of the all-time Serie A record of 27 defeats in a season set by Venezia in 1950.
Home and away, Chievo had won their previous three meetings with Genoa and were unbeaten since February 2010. The Grifone’s only other victory at the Bentegodi was 1-0 in December 2008 along with two defeats and a goalless draw. Davide Ballardini’s men ended a run of four draws from eight rounds since their last win, 1-0 over Udinese on February 17. Chievo haven’t scored on home turf for three games, scraping one point. Marco Borriello got his 68th Serie A goal, the 10th this season.
Siena become Pablo Daniel Osvaldo’s favourite victims, as with this treble he has now put five Serie A goals past them. This was Osvaldo’s first Serie A hat-trick, taking his career tally to 34 and setting a new personal best on 15 for the season. The Giallorossi continued their record of scoring in their last 37 League home ties for a total 80 goals. This was their third clean sheet in the last 20 games.
Osvaldo and Erik Lamela have scored 30 goals between them. Only Marek Hamsik and Edinson Cavani are a more prolific pairing on 32. The Tuscans had been unbeaten in three away matches, earning seven points, but haven’t scored now for 184 minutes of football. Roma have lost just one of their last 10 games, including six victories. They also put four past Palermo, Fiorentina and Milan at the Olimpico this season.
Lazio haven’t conquered the Stadio Tardini since a 2-0 win in February 2010, managing only two draws and a defeat. The Biancocelesti have failed to score in six of the last eight rounds, but at least ended their run of five consecutive away defeats. Parma fired blanks for the fourth game on the bounce. Marco Parolo marked his 100th Serie A appearance.
Udinese celebrated four consecutive Serie A victories for the first time this season and extended their clean sheet to 325 minutes of football. Roberto Pereyra also scored against Cagliari earlier this term, four for the season overall. The Friulani are unbeaten away to Cagliari since a 2-0 result in January 2009, followed by two draws and as many wins. Cagliari have scored only once against Udinese in their last five meetings, home and away. The Sardinians lost two on the bounce for the first time in 2013. Daniele Conti matched Scudetto-winner Mario Brugnera’s record with his 407th appearance in a Cagliari jersey.
Bologna have only ever won once away to Atalanta along with seven draws and six defeats. That lone victory was 1-0 in January 2009.The Rossoblu notched up a fifth consecutive stalemate, the second for the Orobici. Luigi Giorgi marked his fourth Serie A goal, the third of the season after two with Palermo. Alberto Gilardino went up to 159 top flight strikes.
