Zeljko Kalac has suggested the relegation play-off between Perugia and Fiorentina in 2004 “was fixed.”
The former goalkeeper, who now works at Sydney FC with Alessandro Del Piero, made the allegations during an interview with Sports Fan Clubhouse.
“I got relegated with Perugia. We had to play a play-off match against Fiorentina,” said Australian international Kalac.
“Obviously Fiorentina is a massive club, Perugia was just a little club. It’d be fair to say it was scandalous, the way we got knocked out.
“I’m going to say the game was fixed, because we could not cross the halfway line without the Ref pulling the game up.
“That was the first time I’d seen something like that, I couldn't believe it. I’m talking two matches, so 180 minutes of football, and we had no chance to win.”
Fiorentina won the first leg 1-0 away from home, then the second leg ended 1-1 at the Stadio Franchi. The Viola went up to Serie A, while Perugia were relegated 2-1 on aggregate.
It should be noted that in that 1-1 draw Fiorentina went down to 10 men, as Enrico Fantini received two yellow cards.
