Josip Ilicic signed a five-year contract for Fiorentina, reveals why he was so determined to join and how difficult life was at Palermo.
The creative midfielder put pen to paper on a five-year deal this afternoon, holding him to the Viola until June 30 2018.
“I am proud to be here,” the Slovenian declared in a Press conference.
“From the first day that Fiorentina’s proposal arrived, I immediately said yes. I wanted to come here, to join such a strong team. I was not interested in what other clubs wanted me.
“This squad deserves the Champions League. Last season I could see from the outside how good they were and now there are also players like Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Gomez. My initial objective is to find my form, as right now my teammates are at a far more advanced stage of fitness training.”
Ilicic left Palermo for a reported €9m plus performance-related bonuses, as he was unwilling to remain after their relegation to Serie B.
“Fiorentina are straight away a calmer club and the atmosphere does not pour particular pressure on you. As for Palermo, it’s difficult to play well when you change Coach every three months...”
However, for all Ilicic’s praise about Montella, the Slovenian admitted he wasn’t happy with the latest experiment.
“I love to play football and treat the ball the way Montella’s teams do. I like the role of trequartista and, I will be honest, the position in central midfield where Montella is trying me out at the moment is not something I like.”
