Rudi Garcia reveals Daniele De Rossi would reject a Manchester United offer. “He is a man of his word and will stay with Roma.”
The Coach spoke at a Press conference today ahead of Sunday’s Serie A meeting with Hellas Verona. It kicks off at 17.00 UK time (18.00 GMT), click here for a match preview.
Garcia was asked about De Rossi’s situation after English newspaper reports that Manchester United had offered €12m (£10m) for the midfielder.
“Daniele is not just a great player, but also a great man. He is from Roma and wants to play for Roma. We talked it over when he got back from his vacation, as he said past a certain date he would certainly not have left. He is a man of his word and will stay with Roma for the whole season.”
The Giallorossi are revamping elsewhere, as Gervinho arrived from Arsenal and this week Adem Ljajic was signed from Fiorentina. Kevin Strootman is also available for his Serie A debut after recovering from a sprained ankle.
“Ljajic’s fitness levels are about the same as Gervinho, as neither of them have 90 minutes in their legs. It won’t be important whether they start or come in later against Verona, as we just need to win,” continued Garcia.
“It won’t be easy with Verona, as they beat Milan last week, have a lot of quality even aside from Luca Toni and defend well as a collective who can also hit you on the break.
“I know the fans think three points are already in the bag, but that is certainly not the case. We need the support of the fans and for everyone to realise it is not going to be an easy game.”
There will be fewer supporters than usual, as the Curva Sud is locked down as punishment for racist chanting aimed at Mario Balotelli.
“It’s a real shame, but we will play for everyone who is in the stadium and for those who are outside. It means we’ll need even more passion from those in the stands tomorrow.”
Garcia avoided a fine for speaking to his assistant manager via telephone during the 2-0 win over Livorno, as he didn’t know it was against the rules.
“Tomorrow we won’t do anything, but then we’ll have to talk it over with the Italian Federation. We’re not sure what is banned and what isn’t, because the problem is that it varies between countries.”
