Davide Astori’s agent has insisted that there was never the chance of his client signing for another Italian side this summer.
The Cagliari centre-back was linked with switches to Roma, Milan and Napoli during the transfer window.
But his representative has claimed that only Everton were a realistic option for the 26-year-old.
“President Cellino, with whom I have a great relationship, has always stressed the non-transferability of the player,” Claudio Vigorelli told calciomercato. “He is important to Cagliari.
“In any case there was no Italian side that submitted a bid in keeping with the value of the player.
“Our clubs, unfortunately, have been affected by the economic situation.
“Everton? Davide really likes European football, especially the English game – he often follows the League.
“But aside from that, Davide has always said that he is happy in Sardinia.
“He is still young though, so I’m sure there will be other opportunities in the future.”
