Inter President Massimo Moratti hailed the turnaround in Munich. “The God of Football is strange...”
The reigning Champions League holders were crashing out of the competition after trailing 3-1 on aggregate at half-time, but came back to beat Bayern 3-2 on the night, going through on away goals.
“It was such an odd game, as it had so many different moments. It felt safe, then dangerous,” said Moratti.
“In the second half we controlled the tempo well and from there the team felt secure enough to go for the victory.”
Julio Cesar almost threw it all away with another howler, while Goran Pandev popped up for a last-minute winner.
“When a goalkeeper makes a mistake like that, it is a one-off and we cannot judge him harshly, especially as he performs heroics usually.
“Pandev was having a really bad night and really wasn't in the game, but the God of Football is strange...
“This side has character and is very united. Even when things are looking bad, they always manage to turn things around.”
Leonardo replaced Rafa Benitez at Christmas and has since revived their hopes in both Serie A and Europe.
“Leonardo deserves 10 out of 10, because it was so difficult to turn around a game like this, especially at half-time. In terms of psychology, he was wonderful.
“As for the quarter-finals, I bet we'll get Barcelona again,” smiled Moratti.
