Alessandro Florenzi scored his debut senior Italy goal in a 2-2 with Armenia , but felt “the result does not reflect the match.”
The Roma talent rose above the crowd to nod in an assist from his ex-Under-21 teammate Lorenzo Insigne.
“Playing with Lorenzo is easy, as he saw my movement and put the ball on my head,” Florenzi told Rai Sport.
“We didn’t start the way we planned and unfortunately conceded that early goal, but did well to get the game back on track straight away. I think the 2-2 result does not reflect the match.
“The fans played their part and we tried to give them the performance they wanted. Unfortunately we didn’t and we are disappointed.
“I don’t think we were distracted, as we were in control for long periods. The goal didn’t give us victory or the certainty of being top seeds, so it’s a shame. It wasn’t the best performance and we certainly wanted to do better.”
Florenzi has been on stunning form for Roma and explained his unusual celebration, holding a finger across his top lip.
“My father was in the stands and he has a moustache, so I celebrate like that for him.”
He’ll be back on the field on Friday with a Serie A showdown, Roma-Napoli.
“Roma-Napoli will be spectacular and everyone will want to win this ‘war’ between two of the form teams in the League. Who do I fear the most? Insigne. He’s better than Gonzalo Higuain.”
